The Department of Physics of Semiconductors and Microelectronics (DPS&M) incorporates R&D Center of Semiconductor Devices & Nanotechnologies (CSD&N) (the former Research Laboratory of Semiconductor Materials & Devices (RLSM&D)) and Chair of Physics of Semiconductors (CPS).

The Research Laboratory was founded in 1959 by a decision of the State Committee of Science and Technics of USSR and Government of Armenia. Later, in 1965, the Chair of Physics of Semiconductors was founded. In September 2007 the Research Laboratory was transformed into R&D Center of Semiconductor Devices & Nanotechnologies (CSD&N).

Since 1977 the Head of Department (Chair) and Scientific Supervisor of the RLSM&D is Academician of the National Academy of Sciences or Armenia (NASA) and Engineering Academy of Armenia (EAA), Prof. Dr. Vladimir M. Aroutiounian. The Head of RLSM&D since 2000 and Executive Director of the Center since 2007 is Dr. Valeri M. Arakelyan.

Our Mission

Impart to our society through our R&D works, Educational Programs and Work & Training Ethics cultural values of

  • Ergonomic Senosorics (Sensorics and Everyday Life Comfort),
  • Green Science (Renewable Energy, Innovative Agriculture, Food Quality Control, Sustainable Development, and Environmental Monitoring - civil awareness increase),
  • Life-long Learning (Harmony of knowledge and skills in fast changing world for young, mature and old generations).

Facilitate intercultural integrity and harmony through scientific collaboration and knowledge co-enreachment.

Our present R&D strategy
  • Our key advantage is our Knowledge and Experience, we network worldwide our Knowledge and compensate shortcomings of our local research infrastructure and logistics by collaborating R&D research abroad.
  • We try to convey our ideas abroad synergizing our core competence with infrastructural advantages and knowledge of more advanced institutions on co-productive bases.
  • We try to demonstrate our ability to ship research process from Idea to commercially valuable intellectual property/commercial package.
  • Gradually we try to reorganize our local infrastructure in a way to assure above-mentioned synergy to become more effective.
  • We tend to become a desired, reliable regional R&D partner for interested professional parties.

The State funded R&D agenda of the Center is  targeted at investigation of

(i) multi-component semiconductor compounds,
(ii) nano – dimensional structures,
(iii) multi-layer heterostructures,
(iv) semiconductor – electrolyte,
(v) semiconductor-gas,
(vi) semiconductor – liquid crystal and other semiconductor systems and structures.

The state propelled research is aimed at investigation and consecutive development of

(i) novel high efficiency photoelectrochemical and photovoltaic Solar Cells,
(ii) novel gas sensors with high selectivity and short response time,
(iii) thin-film thermophotoelements,
(iv) detectors with high figure of merit,
(v) low current, high efficiency, stable conductors on base of high temperature superconductors for applications in Scientific Instrumentation Filed,
(vi) other semiconductor devices.

Some scope of theoretical and experimental works covers novel methods of materials' and semiconductor structures' Noise Diagnostics as well as it is targeted at development of novel Optical Filters with manageable parameters.
